AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support

The AHA’s ACLS course builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

Who should take this course?

For healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies and for personnel in emergency response.

What does this course teach?

  • Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED

  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest

  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia

  • Airway management

  • Related pharmacology

  • Management of ACS and stroke

  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team

Blended Learning (online portion, followed by hands-on skills session). 

 

HeartCode BLS uses a variety of eLearning assets such as dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities to teach students BLS knowledge and skills.

HeartCode BLS is the AHA’s BLS blended learning delivery method. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on skills session.

Instructor-led, hands-on class format reinforces skills proficiency.

The BLS Instructor-led course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics.

  • Course time:

    • Blended: Approximately 1-2 hours online course with an approximately one-hour skill session after online course completion. 

      • *Skills session needs to be scheduled once the online course is completed. Completion Certificate required to schedule.

      • *Individual learner times will vary; run times will vary based on course path and/or optional topics selected. Breaks are not included in skills session timing.​

    • Classroom:

      • Initial Course: Approximately 4 1/2 hours.

      • Renewal Course: Approximately 3 hours.

  • Course Completion card issued electronically within 24-48 hours of course completion.

  • Course Completion Card is valid for two years.
