The "Fire Prevention Practices” course is a self-paced, online fire course that provides 45 hours (CEUs) toward Florida Fire Safety Inspector I certification. This course is one of the seven courses required for Florida Fire Officer 2 certification and complies with the Job Performance Requirements established by NFPA 1021 and NFPA 1031.

This course familiarizes students with fire inspection procedures and covers issues such as:

  • Reason and purpose of fire inspections

  • Definition of fire inspections

  • Activities of the Fire Prevention Bureau

  • Hazards,

  • Causes of fires

  • Construction types ie structural features, flame spread, occupancy, and fire load,

  • Effective techniques for inspection

  • Conducting effective inspections

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Recognize the duties and authority of a Fire Inspector and understand the legal basis for such duties

  • Understand codes, permits, and standards, and will be able to take part in legal proceedings and recognize the situations in which a permit is required

  • Recognize the chemical and physical changes to materials and substances caused by fire and fire behavior

  • Recognize the various types of constructions and occupancy classifications according to the fire codes, model building, and Florida Fire Prevention Code

  • Calculate occupant loads on exit systems and know appropriate exit methods

  • Identify and describe the parts of a fire alarm system and other attached devices

  • Identify fire hazards that have the potential to create an unsafe environment

  • Recognize the roles of a fire officer or fire inspector in relation to arson investigations

  • Assess site conditions and access requirements

  • Understand and recognize hazardous materials signage, symbols, and markings

  • Identify the packaging methods used in the transport and storage of hazardous materials

  • Comprehend inspection issues around handling, transport, storage, dispensing, use, and disposal of hazardous materials

  • Fully comprehend the plans review process

  • Review system plans and plan views

  • Comply with and recognize the required steps involved in the plans review process

  • Verify plan compliance in the field

  • Provide necessary and effective communication and inspection preparation skills

  • Recognize the importance of, and the reasons for, carrying out inspections and follow-up inspections

  • Recognize the steps involved in comprehensive emergency planning and preparedness documents

  • Handle complaints from citizens

  • Comprehend the administrative duties of the position.
